Oklahoma State hosts Detroit on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 7:05 p.m. inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. The game will serve as a second-round matchup of the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational, which will conclude on Saturday in Las Vegas. OSU is 2-0 this season after a 74-65 win over Texas-Arlington Friday night in Stillwater and a 94-53 rout of Jackson State in the first round of the LVHI on Sunday. Detroit is 1-1 this season, having defeated Rochester 80-61 before falling at Drake 69-61 in the first round of the Las Vegas Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Last Time Out
Juniors Mario Boggan and David Monds combined for 35 points and 17 rebounds in the post and the Cowboys defeated Jackson State 94-53 Sunday afternoon inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. The duo combined to shoot 14-of-19 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Freshman Roderick Flemings, in his first collegiate start, scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds while fellow freshman Kenny Cooper added 12 points and six boards in 18 minutes. As a team, Oklahoma State shot 55.4 percent from the floor, including 17-of-29 (58.6 percent) in the first period. The Cowboys were outstanding from the free-throw in the second half, connecting on 22-of-25 from the charity stripe, good for 88 percent. Meanwhile, OSU limited Jackson State to just 33.9 percent shooting from the floor and forced 22 Tiger turnovers, including nine by JSUs Clinton Johnson. The most telling statistic, however, was that the Cowboys outrebounded Jackson State, 51-22.
About the Titans
Detroit is 1-1 this season with an 80-61 win over Rochester and a 69-61 loss vs. Drake on Sunday afternoon. The Titans are led by junior guard Brandon Cotton who is averaging 15.5 points in two games. He had 17 against Rochester and 14 vs. Drake. Senior forward Chuck Bailey had a team-high 16 points against Drake and leads the team with eight rebounds per game. Detroit has five players averaging at least 9.5 points per game so far this season, and four of those are shooting better than 53 percent from the floor. As a team, the Titans are shooting 50.5 percent from the field, but just 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Head Coach Perry Watson is in his 13th season at Detroit, and brings with him a 228-141 record.
Series History with Detroit
Oklahoma State and Detroit used to play each other on a regular basis as part of the Missouri Valley Conference. In fact, all 16 meetings between these two teams came between 1950 and 1957 as part of league play. OSU is 10-6 all-time vs. Detroit, including a 7-1 mark in Stillwater. That lone loss came on Jan. 8, 1955, when Detroit handed OSU a 62-59 loss in Gallagher Hall. The last time these two teams met, a young sophomore named Eddie Sutton scored 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 from the line as OSU defeated Detroit, 75-66. That same court now bears his name.
Cowboys at home vs. non-league foes
Oklahoma State has once again continued to add to its wins vs. non-conference opponents inside the friendly confines of Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Pokes have won 41 consecutive home non-conference games, dating back to 1998. OSU has won 120 of its last 121 non-conference games held in Gallagher-Iba Arena since Jan. 7, 1987. The only loss during that span was an 83-81 loss to Florida Atlantic on Dec. 1, 1998, when the Cowboys were ranked 11th in the nation. That loss broke a string of 79 consecutive home non-league wins for OSU. Dating back to 1981, Oklahoma State is 150-7 (.955) in those types of games. The Cowboys have not allowed more than 66 points in 36 of their last 38 home non-conference contests.
Postgame Notes From Jackson State Game
