Cowgirl Tennis Rolls on First Day at Regional Championships

Sophomore Iryna Tkachenko won her first round match against BYU's Dolly Chang in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Tkachenko will face Arkansas' Karina Ledaja on Friday in the second round.
Teammate Lauren Simmons also notched a first round win. Simmons defeated Montana's Jonna Schwartz, also in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The junior will face Big 12 rival Tamara Kvaratshelia, Kansas State, Friday in the round of 32.
In the opening round of doubles play, the team of Tkachenko and freshman Zuzanna Osinska beat New Mexico's Nora Quintal and Lucy Scott, 8-4. The duo continued its strong play by beating Colorado State's Carla Pallares and Lauren Strasburger, 8-0, in the second round. They will face Arkansas' Mayori Franco and Karina Ledaja Friday in the round of 16.
The only loss of the day for the Cowgirls came when the duo of Zana Masnic and Simmons lost to New Mexico State's Nicole Fintell and Isabelle Mignot, 8-5.
Play will continue Friday with two rounds of singles play and one round of doubles action at the Eccles Tennis Center at the University of Utah.
