Cowboys Finish Ninth at Pre-National Meet

Oklahoma State's men's cross country team, led by juniors Joe Gray and Mike Devenport, finished ninth in the Pre-National meet at Terra Haute, Ind., on Saturday.
Gray and Devenport both showed their experience as they finished 20th and 32nd, respectively, in a meet that two Cowboy runners did not finish due to unfortunate events down the stretch.
At the 5k mark, freshman standout Ryan Vail lost his shoe when he was knocked down by another runner causing him to drop out of the race. Meanwhile, sophomore David Pomies went down at the 4k mark with an injury to his foot.
“We had some unfortunate things happen to us down the stretch that really hurt us,” said Cowboy Head Coach Dick Weis. “We had some strong performances today, but it is tough to overcome those things.”

“I feel like we can be a top-15 team, maybe even top-10,” said Gray. “We have a few guys with some big race experience and we know we have that kind of potential.”
Freshman Matt Barnes-Smith finished 59th overall with a time of 24:43. Senior Sean McCabe and sophomore Alejandro Ruiz finished 65th and 127th, respectively.
