Cowboy fans get first taste of what's to come

The Cowboys competed in a dunk contest, a 3-point shootout and then ended the festivities with a 20-minute scrimmage.
“For their first time to go out there, they played quite well,” said coach Eddie Sutton. “It's the youngest and most inexperienced group I've coached, but I think they'll grow... I think they'll be up and down early in the year like most young ball clubs, but by the time we get to conference, I think we'll be a good team.”
In the 3-point shootout, sophomore JamesOn Curry and freshman Byron Eaton reached the finals and tied twice before Eaton hit 10 treys in 35 seconds to steal the title from Curry, who finished with five.
Curry shrugged off the loss to his teammate, and said he shared something in common with the rest of the fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
“It was just great to see the young guys and the newcomers get out there on the court in a game-like atmosphere,” Curry said.
In the dunk contest, it came down to freshmen guards Roderick Flemings and Terrel Harris, and Flemings walked away with the title after back-to-back windmill jams.
The Cowboys then split into teams and the Orange team slipped past the Black team with a 40-39 victory.
Freshman Torre Johnson led the Orange team's effort by scoring 12 points, while Eaton contributed with nine points.
Newcomer Jamaal Brown led all scorers with 18 points and got help from junior David Monds, who scored 13 points in the losing effort.
While his team ended up on the losing end, Brown was excited about the atmosphere the fans created.
“I loved it,” Brown said. “If it's that loud now, imagine how loud it's going to be when it's a full house.”
Monds said the performance of the newcomers was one of the key factors to the loud atmosphere, and he also said there is more to come.
“The new guys did really well tonight,” Monds said. “They showed that they will fill an important role and be a great attribute to our team this season.”
