Cowgirl Tennis Squad Opens Spring Season Against SMU
January 27, 2005 | Cowgirl Tennis
“Our girls are very excited about the start of the season,” head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “SMU is a quality opponent and it will be good for us to get to play somebody. We have a lot of work to do this season and we are excited to begin.
Lubicz-Majewski said the coaching staff will use the match as an opportunity to view potential line-ups and placement for the team's newcomers.
OSU is coming off a 7-15 finish during the 2004 season in which they dropped seven matches by a 4-3 score. The Cowgirls have won their last five season openers.
The Cowgirls, led by freshman Iryna Tkachenko, will feature a lineup in which the top five of six singles athletes are underclassmen. Tkachenko, a Kiev, Ukraine native, will hold the top singles and doubles position.
“Iryna is particularly excited about playing this weekend,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “She is a tough competitor who just continues to work hard.”
The Cowgirls lead the all-time series against SMU 6-3, including four straight victories against the Western Athletic Conference foe.
