Cowboys face Sooners in Bedlam action
Oklahoma State travels to Norman, Okla., this Monday night for a Big Monday matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners. Tipoff for the game is set for 8:05 p.m., and it will be televised by ESPN. OSU is 14-2 overall and 4-1 in Big 12 Conference action after an 82-53 win over Baylor Saturday afternoon in Gallagher-Iba Arena. OU is 15-2 overall, 4-0 in league play and coming off a 64-60 victory over Texas Saturday afternoon in Lloyd Noble Center. Oklahoma leads the all-time series with OSU, 118-86, including a 72-26 mark in Norman.
Last game
Joey Graham scored 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting and JamesOn Curry added 14 points off the bench as the Cowboys defeated Baylor, 82-53, Saturday afternoon inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. Oklahoma State went on a 15-0 run after trailing the Bears, 18-11 with 12:44 left in the first half. Seven minutes later, the Pokes were up, 26-18 and cruising to their 14th win of the season. OSU also ended the game on a 14-0 run, with Curry scoring 10 of those. Ivan McFarln added 10 points for the Cowboys, while John Lucas scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists. Terrence Crawford had seven rebounds, six points and five assists of his own. Sophomore David Monds got his first-career start for Oklahoma State. Baylor was led by a trio of Bears — Tim Bush had 19 points and seven rebounds before fouling out, Tommy Swanson had 15 and Aaron Bruce had 11 despite six turnovers. OSU held Baylor to just 31 percent shooting from the floor, including 5-of-22 from long range. Meanwhile, the Pokes were shooting better than 48 percent from the floor and made 20-of-23 shots from the charity stripe.
Sutton ranks seventh all-time
With Saturday’s win over Baylor, Coach Eddie Sutton now has 769 victories, and sits in seventh place on the all-time NCAA Division I career victories list. Sutton passed Henry Iba, who had 767 career wins. Sutton played for Mr. Iba from 1956-59, and was an assistant for the Iron Duke one season. Coach Sutton is 769-294 in his 35 year career at the Division I level. Mr. Iba was 767-338 in his 41 year career as a Division I coach at Northwest Missouri State, Colorado and what was then Oklahoma A&M. His career spanned six decades, from 1929-70. Next up for Coach Sutton is Lou Henson, who had 779 wins in his career which ended last week with his retirement.
OSU-OU on television
OSU’s game at Oklahoma Monday night will be televised by ESPN as part of its Big Monday package. Ron Franklin will handle the play-by-play duties, while Fran Fraschilla will provide expert analysis. It will mark OSU’s fourth appearance of the season on ESPN, and the 13th Cowboy game televised this season. It also marks OSU’s eighth nationally televised game of the season, and second consecutive road game on ESPN’s Big Monday. The Pokes have one more Big Monday game, Feb. 7 vs. the Sooners in Stillwater.
Series vs. the Sooners
Oklahoma leads the all-time series with Oklahoma State, 118-86, including a 72-26 mark in Norman. The Cowboys won both meetings last year, including a 65-52 victory in the Lloyd Noble Center. OSU is 18-12 vs. the Sooners in the Eddie Sutton era, and owns a 9-7 mark vs. Oklahoma since the Big 12 formed. Oklahoma State has won three of the last seven in Norman.
Miscellaneous Notes
All 14 of OSU’s wins this season have come by double figures. The lowest margin of victory for OSU is 10 on three occasions ... The Pokes are averaging 6.5 three-pointers per game, the most by an OSU squad since 1998-99, when that squad averaged 6.8 treys per contest. In fact, the Cowboys’ current average ranks as the third best in school history (the 1994 squad averaged 7.6 threes per game) ... This year’s Cowboys have 17 20-point games between them through 16 contests. Last year’s squad had only five at this point in the year ... Oklahoma State is averaging 11,813 fans per game through eight games this season. This is an actual turnstile count, as most Cowboy games are sold out.
Down the road
Oklahoma State has six days off before traveling to Boulder, Colo., to take on the Colorado Buffaloes (9-7, 1-4) on Sunday, Jan. 30. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. CT, and will be televised by ESPN Regional. The Cowboys will then host Kansas State (11-4, 1-3) on Wed., Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. The game will be televised by ESPN Regional.
