Sophomores Lauren Simmons and Jennifer Poskitt claimed individual honors for Oklahoma State's women's tennis team in the final matches of their respective flights at the 2004 UNLV Invitational Tournament at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas on Sunday.
Simmons defeated Amanda Pratzel of Oklahoma in straight sets in the fourth flight, 7-5, 6-2, to capture the tournament crown. Poskitt followed suit in flight five, downing OU's Chelsea Orr 6-2, 6-3. Both individuals escaped the tournament without a loss.
"I am proud of the performance of our girls this weekend," head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. "I think that they gained some good experience against some tough competition."
Three other Cowgirls posted victories in their consolation matches on the afternoon. Freshman Iryna Tkachenko was dominant in the tournament's first flight, defeating Lauren Fitzgerald of Hawaii in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
In the second flight, Junior Zana Masnic downed Ida Malmberg of Minnesota, 6-2, 6-4. Newcomer Sandra Blajer picked up the Cowgirls' final victory of the tournament by defeating Kimberly Curtis of Hawaii in come from behind fashion, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6.
Over the course of the three day tournament, OSU posted 12 individual and four doubles victories on their way to claiming one team and two individual titles.
"This was a very good tournament for us," Lubicz-Majewski said. "We will be able to make some adjustments and are prepared for our final matches of the fall. This has helped us to get ready for the regional tournament."
The Cowgirls will conclude the fall tournament schedule when they travel to Tulsa for the ITA Regional Tournament at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on October 23.
