Cowgirls Perform Well on Tournament's First Day

“Going into it, we knew that this was going to be a more difficult tournament,” head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “We faced some talented girls from strong schools and were able to perform very well.”
Freshman Jana Kubicikova was the highest flighted Cowgirl to survive first round action. Kubicikova came from behind to defeat Minnesota's Jane Anderson in the flight three, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.
Sophomore Lauren Simmons defeated LSU's Tiffany Tucker in flight four in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Newcomer Sandra Blajer followed suit in flight five, dispatching Jenny Wooten of LSU in come from behind fashion, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5.
Sophomore Jennifer Poskitt was the final Cowgirl to advance through singles play. She defeated Samantha Capelia of Hawaii, 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman standout Iryna Tkachenko was unable to hold onto the lead, falling to Oklahoma's Gabby Baker in the tournament's top flight, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.
“From top to bottom our girls performed well tonight,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “They had some tough matches, but continued to try to win. We just faced some talented girls tonight.”
The team of Blajer and Kubicikova advanced in the third doubles flight with an 8-4 victory over Hawaii's Bihag and Curtis.
The Cowgirls look to continue their strong showing when the consolation and semifinal matches for singles continue at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. The finals for doubles play will begin at 6 p.m.
