Cowgirls Continue Strong Showing on Tournament's Second Day
September 20, 2004 | Cowgirl Tennis
Junior Zana Masnic, sophomore Lauren Simmons and newcomers Jana Kubicikova and Iryna Tkachenko all advanced through two rounds of singles play into the finals bracket.
Tkachenko will compete against Arkansas' Ledaja in the finals of the Australian Open Flight. Tkachenko advanced through Rounds 2 and 3 with a pair of straight set, 6-0, 6-1 victories.
“I am so very impressed with the performance of our team so far,” Head Coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “With our play so far, we have positioned ourselves to win this tournament.”
Masnic will take on Arkansas' Jovanovic in the finals of the Wimbledon Flight. Masnic also downed Saturday opponents in straight sets.
Also advancing into the final round, Simmons will take on Allen of Arkansas in the U.S. Open Flight.
In addition to stellar individual play, the Cowgirls advanced all three doubles teams to the final round of their respective flights.
“We are playing just about as well as we could have hoped to,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “Our girls have come out with a real desire to do well. They play very hard to pick up the win for themselves and for the team.”
Singles finals begin on Sunday at 9 a.m. with consolation matches immediately following. The Lady Razorback Invitational will conclude with the finals of doubles play being held at the University of Arkansas Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.
