September 20, 2004 | Cowgirl Tennis
“From the beginning of the tournament our team played very hard,” head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “Today we faced many difficult opponents. The girls worked hard and I am happy with their performance this weekend.”
In the tournament's Australian Open singles flight, newcomer Iryna Tkachenko, a Kiev, Ukraine native, defeated host school Arkansas' Karina Ledaja, 6-2, 6-1. Tkachenko did not drop a set during the tournament, posting a 4-0 individual record over the weekend.
Junior Zana Masnic, sophomore Lauren Simmons and freshman Jana Kubicikova were defeated in the title matches of their respective divisions. All three posted a 3-1 weekend record.
The Cowgirls advanced two doubles pairs into the final rounds, but neither was able to pick up the victory. In the Italian Open Flight, Tkachenko and Masnic fell in a close decision to Arkansas' Ledaja and Franco, 9-7.
“This was a very good tournament for us,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “We learned some things about the team and I was pleased with our overall performance.”
Over the course of the weekend, the Cowgirl squad posted 18 individual and seven doubles victories.
OSU will continue the fall tournament season on Friday when they travel to the University of Las Vegas Invitational Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.
