Equestrian Wins Zone Championship

The Western team had already secured a spot in this year's IHSA National Championship by winning the regional championship. The Western team will look to win it's second national title in the programs short history, the last coming in 2000.
“This gives us a good idea were we are in this portion of the season,” said Head Coach Larry Sanchez.
The Western team dominated the day with no rider finishing lower than second in the team competition.
Senior Kristin Dickerson, sophomore Nicole Stec and senior Luann Ulrich all placed first in reining, intermediate and advanced horsemanship, respectively.
Junior Crissy Meeks, sophomore Amanda Yancey and junior April Peck placed second in open, beginning and novice horsemanship, respectively.
A trio of Cowgirls from the Western team won individual zone championships.
Junior Lindsey Childress placed first in advanced horsemanship. Teammate and fellow junior Mandy McNally finished first in novice horsemanship. Junior April Peck took home top honors in intermediate horsemanship.
Kristin Dickerson, Crissy Meeks and Erin Hale all qualified for nationals with second-place finishes in their events.
While the Hunter team did not qualify for the zone championships a trio of seniors from the team won zone championships and will advance the nationals.
Lindsay Parker placed first in open flat. Emily Harrison took home the top spot in intermediate flat. Teammate Erin Hale placed first in walk-trot-canter.
Freshman Caitlyn Roberts also advanced to nationals with a second-place finish in novice fences.
“We are really looking forward to going to nationals and competing for another national title,” said Sanchez.
The Equestrian team will next be in action on April 23-24 to defend their Varsity National Championship in Conyers, GA. Then the Cowgirls compete at the IHSA National Championships in Mufreesboro, Tenn. on May 7-9.
