Cowgirls Fall in Another Close Match, 4-3
April 26, 2004 | Cowgirl Tennis
The loss for the Cowgirls (6-14, 1-9) snapped a five match overall win streak against the Cornhuskers and was only the second in school history.
Oklahoma State started off strong, picking up two of the three doubles decisions for the early team lead.
At the No. 1 position, seniors Katya Kolodynska and Jana Karaskova downed Leslie Harvey and Rose Ketmayura 8-3. The Cowgirls claimed the team point when junior Ines Furtmayr and sophomore Zana Masnic defeated Gitte Ostermann and Katie Garcia 8-6.
Nebraska was able to avoid the doubles sweep by picking up the 8-5 victory at the third position.
“We did not play well at all today in doubles,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “We got a few lucky bounces and were able to pull out the victory in two of the matches.”
OSU was unable to hold the early team lead, dropping four of the six singles positions in the one point loss.
The Cornhuskers tied the match when Garcia defeated freshman Jennifer Poskitt at the No. 6 position, 6-0, 6-0. Nebraska took the lead when Furtmayr fell to Harvey in straight sets at the third position, 6-3, 6-1.
The Cowgirls tied the match at two when Masnic defeated Anna Oehme in straight sets at the No. 4 position, 6-4, 6-0.
Nebraska once again took the lead when Milena Schulz-Gartner defeated Karaskova at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-1.
The Cowgirls' final team point came at the No. 5 position where freshman Lauren Simmons battled Pamela Castillejos through the first set to cruise to the 7-6, 6-0 victory.
“Our girls in the middle positions played well today,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “In order to be successful at this level we must find some more consistency from all of the positions, something that we lacked today.”
Nebraska claimed the match point when Ostermann outlasted Kolodynska at the top single's position, 6-4, 7-6(2).
The Cowgirls finish the regular season against Iowa State tomorrow at the DeBois Tennis Center in Stillwater. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
“We are going to come out and play our hardest,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “It is our last match of the season and we definitely want to come away with a win.”
