Cowgirls Fall in Tight Bedlam Match, 4-3
April 23, 2004 | Cowgirl Tennis
The Cowgirls (6-13, 1-8) were swept in the doubles matches, giving the No. 19 Sooners (18-3, 7-2) the early 1-0 team lead.
“Dropping the doubles point in such an evenly contested match makes it so hard to win,” head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “We were able to really compete today and if we picked up the doubles victory, it might have been a different match completely.”
Both schools split the singles victories, proving how crucial the doubles point is in being successful.
At the top position, senior Katya Kolodynska proved to be a difficult test for the nation's fifth ranked individual, Anda Perianu. Kolodynska fell in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5.
“I am very proud of the way that Katya played today,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “She gave one of the top individuals in the country a real tough match today and had a chance to win it.”
At the second position, senior Jana Karaskova tied her opponent in the second set before she fell to Irina Lykina, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
The Cowgirls tallied their first team point when junior Ines Furtmayr defeated Gabby Baker 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Zana Masnic followed suit at the No. 4 position, defeating Heather Saluri 2-6, 6-2, 7-6.
The Sooners claimed the match when Jessica Braver defeated freshman Lauren Simmons in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
Sophomore Jennifer Poskitt tallied the Cowgirls final team point at the No. 6 position, defeating Joi-lee Beachler 7-6, 7-5.
The Cowgirls will return to finish the regular season when they face conference opponents Nebraska and Iowa State at the DeBois Tennis Center this weekend. The match against Nebraska is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m.
“We are just going to return home and try to play our hardest,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “We really want to end the season on a high note and be victorious against Nebraska on Saturday.”
