Cowgirl Softball Splits at Kansas
April 18, 2004 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State is now 25-22 overall and 5-6 in league play. Kansas is 25-22-1 overall and 3-8 in conference action.
The first game was scoreless heading into the fifth when Oklahoma State doubled its hit total with a pair of singles from Alliya Anderson and Lacy Darity. It would be all they would get as the Cowgirls left two runners stranded to end the frame with nothing to show on the scoreboard.
The Jayhawks faired better in the bottom half of the frame. Kansas led off with a double, the first extra base hit of the game, and Melaney Torres moved into scored position after an Oklahoma State error. Jessica Moppin plated Torres for the go-ahead run before the Cowgirls defense buckled down and came through with three outs to end the inning.
Kansas added an insurance run off a RBI single from Melanie Wallach in the sixth to take the 2-0 win.
Jessica Hoppock took the loss for the Cowgirls, giving up two earned runs off six hits, seven strikeouts and two walks.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the second half of the doubleheader, combining for four hits through four innings of play.
KU made a charge in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles. A wild pitch followed and the Jayhawks had runners on second and third but Hoppock struck out Sylvia Pfieffer to end the threat.
The Cowgirls put together a rally of their own in the top of the sixth after Megan Carey led off with a blooper to left field. Crystal Lee moved Carey into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and the leftfielder rounded the bases on an error by Kansas' shortstop to give Oklahoma State its first lead of the day.
It did not last for long as Kansas evened the score in the bottom of the frame on a two-out solo home run from Destiny Frankenstein.
OSU took care of business in its final at-bat to avoid the sweep. Courtney Totte reached first on a base hit and did not have to wait long to come home. Carey followed with her fifth long ball of the season to lift the Cowgirls to victory, 3-1.
Hoppock went the distance in game two for the Cowgirls, earning the win and improving to 20-15 overall. Hoppock scattered five hits and gave up one run off seven strikeouts and one walk.
Oklahoma State returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Texas A&M for a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Cowgirl Stadium.
