Cowgirl Tennis Falls to BYU
March 09, 2004 | Cowgirl Tennis
The No. 70 Cowgirls dropped all three doubles contests and the first three singles contests in their home opening loss.
At the No. 3 doubles position, freshmen Lauren Simmons and Jennifer Poskitt fell to Rebecca Pike and Nicole Schnieder, 8-2.
BYU (10-3, 1-0) claimed the doubles point with a victory at the No. 2 position. Junior Ines Furtmayr and sophomore Zana Masnic were defeated by Hadley MacFarlane and Olga Boulytcheva, 8-3.
The No. 1 doubles position was not finished.
“BYU is the number one team in our region,” head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “They are a very good team and very strong in doubles play.”
OSU (3-4, 0-1) was unable to notch a singles team point, falling in the first three decided matches to end the days contest.
At the No. 3 position, Furtmayr was dropped in straight sets by BYU's Lauren Jones, 6-2, 6-1. Sofia Holden continued the Cougars winning by picking up the 6-2, 6-0 victory over senior Jana Karaskova at the No. 2 position.
The day ended at the No. 1 position where senior Katya Kolodynska fell in straight sets to No. 39 Barbara Zahnova 6-3, 6-2.
“We should have played better than we did,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “BYU is a very good team and we have been hampered by small injuries lately. We still should have performed better today.”
The rest of the singles contests were not finished because the match outcome had been decided.
The Cowgirls will look to break a two match losing skid when they face Kansas on March 12 at the Robinson Courts in Lawrence, Kan.
“The match against Kansas will be tough because it will be on their turf,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “Hopefully our team will get a little more relaxed and we will come out ready this weekend.”
