OSU Western Equestrian Team Wins Region, Qualifies for Nationals
March 08, 2004 | Cowgirl Equestrian
Though the team didn't win a show this weekend, the Cowgirls took a 30-point lead into the weekend and remained in the lead by 18 points at the end.
Texas A&M had a late run at chipping away at the Cowgirl lead but couldn't make up the deficit to record its second regional championship. The Aggies recorded a pair of wins during the weekend, scoring 25 and 30 points in the last two shows, respectively.
The Cowgirls placed third in the first show with 20 points, with West Texas A&M recording their first top finish of the season with 23 points. TAMU finished in second with 21 points. OSU then recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the remaining two shows. The 23 and 22 points they earned were good enough to fend off A&M's late run.
OSU finished the season with 215 points followed by Texas A&M with 196 points. West Texas A&M chipped in 160 points to round out the top three.
Kristin Dickerson completed her final regular season as the regional high point rider and will represent the region at nationals. The Las Cruces, N.M., native qualified for regionals in Reining and Opend Horsemanship.
The Cowgirls notched 13 top finishers over the weekend, with four of the riders earning multiple wins. Laura Brawdy recorded a pair of first-place finishes in Intermediat I, while Lacy Boyer earned two top finishes in Intermediate II. Mandy McNally finished first in Novice in the second show, and was the lone Cowgirl to record a win during Sunday's show.
Kayla Elmenhorst finished the weekend with first-place finishes in Reining and Open Horsemanship. Elmenhorst also qualified for regionals in Reining.
Whitney Holden, Baily Nicholson and Maggie Engles all recorded top finishes in the first show, while Amanda Yancy and Cheryl Adamson also chipped in first-place finishes in the second show.
Overall, the Cowgirls advanced 15 riders to the regional championships. Dickerson is the only OSU rider to qualify for regionals in multiple discilpines.
The Cowgirls return to action March 13 when they compete at the Fresno State Invitational.
