Cowgirls Fall to No. 16 Aggies
March 28, 2004 | Cowgirl Tennis
“The match was much closer than it appears,” said head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. “We gave them a good fight in the doubles matches and were competitive at every position.”
The lone victory for the Cowgirls (5-7, 1-3) came at the No. 2 doubles position where junior Ines Furtmayr and sophomore Zana Masnic defeated Roberta Spencer and Lauren Walker, 8-4.
Texas A&M (12-6, 4-0) won the doubles point by picking up victories at the first and third positions.
The senior tandem of Katya Kolodynska and Jana Karaskova fell Jessica Roland and Helga Vieira, 8-2. Freshmen Jennifer Poskitt and Lauren Simmons were defeated at the No. 3 position, 8-4, by Anna Lubinsky and Nicki Mechem.
“We played doubles very well and will probably still do some adjustment to our lineups,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “It is hard to criticize our team for the effort that they have been putting forward.”
In singles play, the Cowgirls dropped six tightly contested matches.
At the No. 1 position, Kolodynska fell to No. 16 Roland in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Karaskova was defeated at the third position by Spencer, 6-4, 6-1, giving A&M the 3-0 overall lead.
The Aggies clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at the No. 4 position where Walker dropped Masnic. The Cowgirls lost the remaining matches of the day, giving Texas A&M the shutout.
In her first match at the No. 2 position, Furtmayr held an early lead against Vieira before falling in the tie breaking set, 6-7, 6-4, (10-4).
“We are pleased with the way that Ines played today,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “She is playing a bit out of position but I am confident that she will do well for us.”
OSU will face their second consecutive top-25 opponent tomorrow when they square off against No. 11 Texas at the DuBois Tennis Center at noon.
“We cannot change the lineups for tomorrow, but I am confident with the way we will play,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “Ines and Zana have played very well for us and as a team we will work hard to hopefully steal a victory.”
In case of inclement weather, the match will be moved to the Oak Tree Tennis Center in Edmond at noon.
