Softball Splits On Day One In Florida

In the opening contest Kristen Neil gave up one run in the first before being replaced by Jessica Hoppock. Kent State loaded the bases and scored on a wild pitch before Hoppock entered and retired the next three batters to end the inning.
The Cowgirls answered in the bottom of the frame with a RBI triple from Courtney Totte. Shanel Scott scored on the play after earning a free pass to first to start off the frame.
Megan Carey gave OSU the lead in the second, plating Totte with a double to left field. Carey then scored on a bases loaded walk before Brittney Robinson entered to get KSU out of the inning.
Ashleigh Tweed scored Oklahoma State's final run of the game off a passed ball in the fourth inning. Tweed reached on a base hit, moved into scoring position on an error and advanced to third on a sacrifice to set up the play.
Kent State chipped at the Cowgirls lead in the top of the sixth with a solo home run. The rally continued with back-to-back singles but Hoppock forced a fly out and retired the final two batters to end the threat.
Hoppock improved to 12-7 on the year, tossing 7.0 innings in relief. The freshman surrendered one run on five hits and five strikeouts.
The Cowgirls fell to Florida Atlantic, 5-4, in game two. The Owls exploded for five second inning runs and proved to be too much for OSU to overcome.
Christina Thompson brought in the first run of the game with a single through the left side. Jessica Sachs followed with a grand slam to clear the bases and give FAU a 5-0 lead.
Oklahoma State got on the board in the fourth inning with a double from Alliya Anderson. The Cowgirls had runners on the corners after a single, error and fielder's choice when Anderson came up with the shot to left field.
OSU put together another rally in the seventh, benefiting from a RBI double. Crystal Lee brought in two runs with the hit to left center and pulled the Cowgirls within one but FAU's Candice Freel struck out Jade Lindly to earn the win for the Owls.
Hoppock took the loss for Oklahoma State, giving up five runs on eight hits and three strikeouts.
Oklahoma State (15-13) returns to action at 11 a.m. (CST) on Saturday against Florida International. The Cowgirls will face Akron in the contest immediately following.
