Cowgirls Fall for the First Time in 2004
March 01, 2004 | Cowgirl Tennis
The No. 63 Lady Cougars claimed the early lead by picking up the doubles point and never looked back, winning four of the six singles matches.
The Cowgirls (2-1, 0-0) got off to a quick lead when seniors Katya Kolodynska and Jana Karaskova picked up the victory in the No. 1 doubles position over Orsolya Sallai and Chris Martinez, 8-4.
Washington State (2-3, 0-1) would claim the first team point by picking up the victories in both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles slots. The Cowgirls bad luck continued in singles competition where they dropped four tightly contested matches.
Kolodynska put OSU on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 straight set decision over Sallai at the No. 1 position. At the No. 3 position, junior Ines Furtmayr notched the Cowgirls' only other team point with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 decision over Martinez.
At No. 2 singles, Karaskova was unable to muster much offense in the tie-breaking set, falling to Lorena Arias 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (10-3). Washington State's Nora Gaal sealed the deal for the Lady Cougars, defeating sophomore Zana Masnic at the No. 4 position, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
OSU's freshman tandem did not fare much better at the lower positions. Lauren Simmons was unable to hold her early lead, falling to Amy Toth at the No. 5 slot as Jennifer Poskitt fell to Zsofia Fodor in straight sets at the sixth position.
The Cowgirls will return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they face the Lady Eagles of Boston College in the second day of competition of the UNLV Women's Tennis Spring Invitational.
