Equestrian To Host a Pair of Shows this Weekend
February 05, 2004 | Cowgirl Equestrian
“We have been working hard and trying to get back into shape, as well as the horses, after the break,” coach Suzanne Flaig said. “We are looking good right now. All the girls are strong and looking forward to the show. We are looking to regain some ground on Texas A&M this weekend.”
The Cowgirls enter the weekend in second place with 105 points, seven points behind regional leader Texas A&M. West Texas A&M is currently in third with 63 points, while Texas Tech and Louisiana State round out the top five with 56 and 55 points, respectively.
OSU is fresh off a 34-29 victory over Texas A&M in the third English show of the season. Five riders fueled the Cowgirls to victory with their first-place finishes, including defending IHSA National Champion Lindsey Smith. The Mountain Home, Ark., native rode to her third-consecutive first-place finish of the season in Intermediate Fences.
“Lindsey will not show Saturday because she is getting close to pointing out, but she will show on Sunday,” Flaig said. “When she moves up, she will be a strong open rider, too.
“Kristin (Dickerson) being a senior is a great example for all the girls,” Flaig said “She works very hard and deserves all her success. We look for her to be a strong competitor this weekend.”
Corrie Janssen captured her first top finish of the year in Open Fences, while Dickerson continued her phenominal first semester with her third-consecutive first place finish of the year in Novice Fences. April Peck and Cory Johnson each chipped in first-place finishes in Beginner Walk-Trot-Canter and Novice Flat, respectively.
“Lindsey and Kristin are very good examples of putting credit where it is due,” Flaig said. “Both are very natural athletes, and they both put the work into their practices so the success for them will come.”
