Cowgirl Softball Splits At Wildcat Invitational
February 29, 2004 | Cowgirl Softball
In the first contest of the day the Cowgirls were held to two hits. OSU's only offense came in the third stanza when Shanel Scott singled and Courtney Totte doubled to get in scoring position. It was all the Cowgirls could muster as Stanford's Dana Sorenson retired the next three Cowgirl batters to preserve the shutout.
Stanford used four long balls to account for nine of its runs in the contest. The Cardinal went yard twice in the first inning, hit a grand slam in the second and added a two-run shot in the fourth. The game was called after five innings on the eight-run rule.
Jessica Hoppock (6-2) took the loss for the Oklahoma State, lasting 1.2 innings and allowing eight runs on seven hits. Kristen Neil gave up two runs on five hits, throwing the final 2.1 innings in relief.
Sorenson (4-0) scattered two hits and struck out six Cowgirls for the win.
The Cowgirls bounced back in the second game to defeat South Florida 3-2. Oklahoma State scored an unearned run in the first without a hit thanks to smart base running.
Courtney Tote walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by South Florida's catcher. After a second out, Crystal Lee earned a free pass to first and the two worked a double steal to bring Totte home for an early 1-0 lead.
The Bulls countered by scoring two in the third for the 2-1 advantage. Kattrina Dowd hit a solo home run and Shelly Walker scored after a pair of base hits.
The Cowgirls answered with the equalizing run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from Stephanie Nicholson.
OSU regained the lead and plated the game-winning run in the fifth. Totte walked and scored all the way from first on a single to right center from Nicholson.
Hoppock (7-2) picked up the win for the Cowgirls, striking out seven and allowing two runs on six hits. Ellis gave up three runs on four hits and fanned six while taking the loss for South Florida.
Oklahoma State (10-5) faces Boston at 2 p.m. (CST) and second-ranked Arizona at 4 p.m. (CST) on day two of the Wildcat Worth Invitational.
