Cowgirl Softball Splits On Final Day In San Diego
February 16, 2004 | Cowgirl Softball
The Cowgirls got an early start to the day, resuming the contest with San Diego State at 9 a.m. after it was called due to darkness on Saturday.
The Aztecs led 10-2 entering the bottom of the fourth when the game was called and picked up right where they left off Sunday morning. SDSU plated a final run in the fifth to earn the run-rule win.
San Diego State scored in each of its at-bats; three in the first, third and fourth innings and four in the second. The Cowgirls scored one run in the first and third innings.
Randi Cook (0-2) lasted one inning against the Aztecs, allowing four unearned runs off one hit. Jessica Hoppock threw two innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits. Kristen Neil closed out the contest, allowing three earned runs on five hits.
OSU was on the wrong side of a 4-3 decision against Santa Barbara on Friday but that was not the case in the second meeting. The Cowgirls came up big with the long ball, scoring three runs off two dingers.
Oklahoma State took a 3-0 lead and watched UCSB knot it at 3-3 in the top of the sixth before coming up with the dramatic win.
Megan Carey gave OSU the early advantage, going yard with two outs in the bottom of the first. Carey's shot also scored Stephanie Nicholson who reached on a walk.
A free trip to first for Erika Ennis led to the Cowgirls lone run in the fifth. After taking the base, Ennis stole second and third and scored on an error by Santa Barbara's third baseman.
The Gauchos touched Hoppock for four hits, including a triple and a double, to tie up the game in the sixth.
The Cowgirls would not be denied and Courtney Totte hit a two out home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift OSU to victory. Hoppock (2-0) earned win, throwing her second complete game of the weekend. The freshman fanned five and allowed three runs on seven hits.
Oklahoma State (2-3) opens the home portion of the regular season, hosting Oklahoma City at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
