Cowgirls Victorious in Season Opener
February 15, 2004 | Cowgirl Tennis
OSU kept their all-time record perfect against the Southland Conference opponent by picking up victories in four of six singles matches.
“I am so proud of the effort our team put out today,” head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “What the girls showed today was really special. Texas-Arlington is a very talented team.”
The Cowgirls (1-0) fell behind the Mavericks (2-2) after dropping two of three doubles points. At the No. 1 position, the senior tandem of Katya Kolodynska and Jana Karaskova fell to Marketa Cizova and Daniela Novakova, 8-5.
UTA claimed the doubles team point at the No. 2 position where Monika Peciulionyte and Simri van Rooyen defeated junior Ines Furtmayr and sophomore Zana Masnic, 8-4. The No. 3 doubles did not finish.
At the No. 1 position, Kolodynska scored her first upset of the year, defeating No. 46 Peciulionyte in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Karaskova gave OSU the lead, downing Cizova, 7-5, 6-2. “Kolodynska played fantastic against a tough opponent,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “Jana also performed much better than she did over the fall against a girl that was Arlington's No. 1 last year.”
Texas-Arlington reclaimed the lead with victories in the third and fourth positions. Novakova dropped sophomore Zana Masnic at the No. 4 position, 7-6, 6-1.
Freshman Lauren Simmons was unable to maintain the Cowgirl lead, falling 6-2, 6-2 to van Rooyen.
Furtmayr evened the match at three when she defeated Anete Rozkalne in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
After losing the first set, true freshman Jennifer Poskitt came from behind to beat Vetrovcova at the No. 6 position, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, giving the Cowgirls their first victory on the season.
“Jennifer won the match for us,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “She played extremely hard and showed some real promise against a quality opponent.”
Oklahoma State will return to action on Sunday when they play host to Southwest Missouri State (1-3) at 9:30 a.m. at the Oak Tree Tennis Facility in Edmond.
