Softball Drops Two At Aztec Invitational
February 14, 2004 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in its first at-bat against UC Santa Barbara. Shanel Scott led off the contest with a base hit to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Courtney Totte.
Stephanie Nicholson followed with a RBI single down the right field line to push Scott home. Nicholson promptly stole second and rounded the bases on a single from Jennie Killman. Killman scored the final run of the frame on a Crystal Lee double.
Santa Barbara chipped away at the margin and ultimately came away with the 4-3 win. The Gauchos scored one run in the third thanks to Brittany Putich. Putich provided all the offense of the inning, knocking a triple to right field and scoring on a wild pitch.
Back-to-back doubles from Heather Nobbe and Putich cut OSU's lead to 3-2 after five innings.
The Gauchos then took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Katie Oliver got the rally started with a double and scored the equalizing run on a base hit from Lindsey Herrin. After Herrin was thrown out at second, Kendra Singly followed with the game-winning hit, a home run to right field.
Jessica Hoppock earned the start for the Cowgirls, giving up three runs on four hits in 5-1/3 innings. The freshman also had two strikeouts and one walk in her debut as a Cowgirl. Fellow freshman Randi Cook was saddled with the loss after collecting the final two outs to close out the contest. Cook gave up one run on two hits.
Lindsey Sommer picked up the win for Santa Barbara, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out eight Cowgirls.
Oklahoma State's offense was stagnate in the second contest of the day. The Cowgirls managed just two hits against San Diego State, both coming in the seventh inning. A slow outing at the plate combined with four errors, kept the Cowgirls out of the game.
The Aztecs plated one run in the second and fourth innings and two in the fifth.
The Cowgirls avoided the shutout with a sole run in the final frame. Nicholson touched Velazques for a double and Lee brought her home with a RBI single.
Kristen Neil took the loss on the mound, giving up four runs, one earned, on five hits. Cook threw the final inning, striking out one batter.
Celena Velasquez picked up the win for the Aztecs, fanning five Cowgirls, walking one and allowing one run.
The Cowgirls (0-2) will look to pick up their first win of the season when they face Mississippi State at 11 a.m. (PST) and a rematch with San Diego State 3 p.m. (PST) on day two of the Aztec Invitational.
