Frans has a chance to improve greatly with the addition of Jimmy Williams to the Cowboy coaching staff. Williams is a post specialist, and should be able to improve the playing skills of all the post players. Frans has all the athletic ability in the world, and has been improving his basketball skills steadily throughout his brief career. This season, he has a chance to put that big body to the test and see if hes capable of making a significant contribution to the team.
2003-04 (Junior): Frans played in 14 games last season, and started vs. Southeastern State on Dec. 16. He shot 52.9 percent from the floor while averaging 1.6 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. His best offensive effort was against Texas-San Antonio on Dec. 3, when he scored six points, connecting on all three field-goal attempts. He grabbed a career-best four rebounds vs. Southeastern State on Dec. 16, and played a season-high 14 minutes against Colorado State in Tulsa on Nov. 26. Frans scored four points and grabbed three rebounds vs. Northwestern State in the season opener. He finished with seven multiple-block games on the year.
2002-03 (Sophomore): Frans played one minute against Syracuse in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and was credited with one rebound. He scored two points and had two rebounds in 10 minutes against Colorado. Frans played his most significant minutes with 17 at Kansas, with three rebounds, an assist, one steal and a blocked shot. He played 10 minutes against Texas, which included two rebounds and a block. He got in as a defensive wall in the Oklahoma game, guarding Jabahri Brown on the inbounds pass with 1.7 seconds remaining. He played nine minutes vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and recorded one rebound. Frans scored three points, had one rebound and one steal vs. Arkansas. He scored two points and grabbed two rebounds in 10 minutes vs. UMKC, and two blocks and three rebounds in 10 minutes against Hartford. Frans scored two points and grabbed three rebounds in his collegiate debut at Alaska-Anchorage. Frans was named first-team Academic All-Big 12 by the league office for his efforts in the classroom.
2001-02 (Freshman): Frans sat out his freshman season after being declared a partial qualifier. He is on track to graduate in December of 2004, and will be able to regain a year of eligibility if he does so.
High School: Frans played rugby for 11 years in his native South Africa before coming to the United States. He was the MVP of the rugby team his senior year. Frans also played cricket back home in South Africa, and also competed in track and field, recording the fifth-best shot put throw in the South African junior top-10 with a throw of 15.0 meters. Frans had the 10th-best distance in the discus with a throw of 42.48 meters in the same list. He came to the United States in January of 2001 and spent five months working out with R.C. Buford of the San Antonio Spurs organization.
Personal: Born July 19, 1982, Frans is the son of Douw and Eunece Steyn. He enjoys fishing, hunting and playing rugby in his spare time. Frans is majoring in international business at Oklahoma State.
