October 23, 2004 | Cowgirl Tennis
Oklahoma State's remaining doubles tandems were eliminated in the Round of 16 at the Women's Wilson/ITA Region V Championships at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Friday evening.
The Cowgirls advanced both teams through the Round of 32 only to have them fall in their next matches.
“This was a good experimental tournament for us,” head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “We have had to mix-and-match doubles teams and have finally found some combinations that I think will work for us.”
Newcomers Sandra Blajer and Jana Kubicikova defeated Bethanie Griffin and Christie Baxley of
Junior Zana Masnic and freshman Iryna Tkachenko teamed to advance past BYU's Rabella Pike and Brianna Williams, 8-4. The duo was defeated by Pamela Castellejos and Katie Garcia in a close match, 8-5.
Tkachenko also competed in singles action, falling in straight sets to the tournament's sixth seed Yanick Dullens of Denver in the Round of 32, 6-2, 6-3.
“We used this tournament as a way to get ready for the spring,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “Our team knows what we need to do to improve and what it takes to win. The fact that we did well during these tournaments is a bonus for our overall goal of a successful spring season.”
The end of the tournament signaled the end of the Cowgirl's fall season. Practice for the regular season will continue in January.
