PRESS RELEASE
August 27, 2003
Cowboy Football is here again. Streets and highways will be congested with vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Heavy traffic along highways and city streets can be expected as well as traffic delays. Local law enforcement agencies will be working together to assist you during your game day visits to Stillwater. We are offering these few suggestions to help make game day travel easier and safer.
· Plan your trip and try to arrive early enough to avoid traffic congestion just prior to the game.
· Look for alternate routes to and from Lewis Field.
· Local game day traffic reports will be aired on 105.1 FM, 'The Bee' and 1020 AM Double Play Sports Radio. Periodic traffic reports will be aired before the Cowboy Sports Properties pre-game report (approximately 1 ½ hours before game time) and following the post game report.
· If possible, wait around for a while after the game and allow the rush of traffic to subside.
· Be courteous and drive safely.
Parking can also be a problem. If you are not aware, OSU has lost many parking spaces due to construction projects on campus. Arrive in plenty of time to find a safe and legal parking space. If you park on private property without permission, or on a public street in violation of municipal parking ordinance, your vehicle could be ticketed and towed.
Local Law Enforcement Agencies will be providing the following services for motorists on game days.
Oklahoma State University Police Department will have the following available to assist motorists arrive and depart:
· 11 officers on campus, manually directing traffic.
· 3 officers at the three major intersections on Hall of Fame closest to Lewis Field.
· Escort the visiting team after the game.
You may not know that all off-duty OSU officers are utilized on game days.
The Stillwater Police Department will provide:
· The pre-game visiting team escort.
· Assign 6 officers to direct traffic at major high traffic city locations (i.e. 6th and Western).
· Officers will monitor other intersections as needed and may control traffic lights manually to aid in the flow of traffic.
· The traffic signals at 6th and Country Club and 6th and Sangre will be reprogrammed to give priority to football traffic.
Anywhere from 6 to 10 off-duty officers are utilized for game day events. Officers may be seen standing or parked near intersections; they are working. They may be monitoring traffic or controlling traffic lights manually.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol will provide:
· A number of Troopers between I-35 and Lewis Field to keep traffic moving and clear traffic jams.
· After the game, Troopers will increase the ability of southbound traffic to continually merge onto I-35 by directing other motorists into the inside lane at the S.H. 51 access.
Troopers from Troop K, Pawnee, and additional Troopers from all over the state are used to help ensure the safety of game day motorists.
Alternate Routes:
If you are coming from the south, such as the Oklahoma City Metro area you may consider using these alternate routes:
· I-40 and U.S. 177 at Shawnee
· Turner Turnpike (I-44) and U.S. 177 at Wellston
· I-35 and S.H. 33 at Guthrie to U.S. 177
If you are coming from the Tulsa area you may consider using:
