September 22, 2003 | Cowboy Football
Rashaun Woods caught an NCAA-record seven touchdown passes as Oklahoma State rolled to a 52-6 victory over SMU at Gerald J. Ford Stadium here Saturday night.
Woods' seven touchdown receptions established an NCAA record that was previously held by San Diego State's Tim Delaney who caught six TD passes against New Mexico State in 1969.
Five of Woods' seven touchdowns came in the first half with his sixth coming at the 13:31 mark of the third quarter and his record-setter coming at the 4:53 mark of the third period.
A large contingent of orange-clad OSU fans watched the Cowboys win their third game of the year against just one loss. They watched Woods haul in 13 catches for 232 yards, an OSU single-game record However, the 13 catches was three short of the single-game record already held by Woods.
Oklahoma State put the game away with an offensive explosion in the first half that was ignited by the Cowboys' All-American receiver.
Woods dominated the first half and re-wrote the record book in the process. Woods was on the receiving end of five touchdown passes from Josh Fields as the Pokes raced to a 38-0 halftime advantage.
The five touchdown receptions was not only a career high for Woods, it established a new single-game OSU and Big 12 Conference record.
Oklahoma State took control early when defensive back Darrent Williams intercepted an SMU pass and returned it to the Mustang three-yard line. It was Williams' second interception of the season and set up OSU's first score of the game.
The Cowboys' first points came on a two-yard pass from Fields to Woods at the 10:10 mark of the first quarter.
Oklahoma State's special teams came through on SMU's next possession. Chase Holland blocked a Mustang punt giving the Cowboys a first down on the 38-yard line. The drive stalled, but OSU added to its side of the scoreboard with a 32-yard field goal by Luke Phillips.
After a three-and-out series by SMU, Gabe Lindsay returned a punt 28 yards to the Mustang 24. Woods followed with his second touchdown reception of the game, capping a 24-yard drive in five plays.
On OSU's next possession, Woods again found the endzone. Coming in motion out of the backfield, Woods caught Fields' pass and raced 34 yards for the score. It gave the Pokes a 24-0 lead at the 14:40 mark of the second quarter.
Woods' fifth touchdown of the half came at the 8:41 mark on a 25-yard pass from Fields.
Oklahoma State's defense was stifling in the first half, limiting the Mustangs to just two first downs and 33 yards of total offense. Twenty-one of the total yards came on a pass play to the flat to the Mustangs' Keylon Kincade. SMU's initial first down of the game came at the 7:46 mark of the second quarter, coming on a facemask penalty against the Cowboys.
Oklahoma State ended the half with 205 yards of total offense, 137 of which belonged to Woods. Tailback Tatum Bell had 15 first-half rushes for 48 yards.
