Cowgirls Finish Strong at Lady Razorback Invitational
September 15, 2003 | Cowgirl Tennis
The senior duo of Katia Kolodynska and Jana Karaskova advanced to the finals of doubles competition with an 8-6 victory over Arkansas's Anna Dybicz and Iliana Pacheco.
In the final round, the tandem could not hold a 7-4 lead, falling to tournament champions Marketa Cizova and Daniela Novakova of Texas Arlington, 9-7.
'We made it to the finals and just couldn't close it out,' said Head Coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. 'For never having played together, Katia and Jana did very good.'
After being placed in the consolation bracket following a first day loss, freshman Lauren Simmons advanced to the finals before falling in a close match to Timberley Greenley of Tulsa, 8-6.
'Lauren did amazing,' said Lubicz-Majewski. 'We got a bargain with her. After she lost to a girl ranked (in the Top 15) in the Czech Republic, she came back to win three matches. I am very proud of her.'
Kolodynska made it to the semifinals in singles consolation, only to be dropped by eventual champion, Greenley, 8-4.
The lone Cowgirl to advance in the winners bracket was junior Ines Furtmayr. In the third round, Furtmayr was eliminated by Arkansas's Simona Arghire in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
'Ines played well for us this weekend,' said Lubicz-Majewski. 'Against the second ranked girl from Romania she was able to hold her own.'
The Cowgirls will return to action at the UNLV Invitational Tournament on Sept. 25-28. 'We will be ready,' said Lubicz-Majewski. 'We will go to work this next week and get some things fixed so that we can compete hard in Las Vegas.'
