Saturday's Game
As though the Bedlam Series needed more intrigue, Oklahoma State plays host to Oklahoma on Saturday with first place in the Big 12 South Division on the line. The Sooners currently lead the division and are second in the league with an 8-3 record; OSU is 7-4 and would tie OU and own the tiebreaker with a victory Saturday. The Cowboys have won five of their last six after Monday's 81-66 win at Iowa State.
OSU-Oklahoma: The Series
The Cowboys' Jan. 26 victory in Norman gave OSU its seventh triumph in the last 10 Bedlam matchups, but OU leads the all-time series 111-79. OSU has won the last five meetings in Stillwater, including last year's dramatic 73-72 overtime victory. Coach Eddie Sutton owns a 15-7 record against the Sooners, including a 10-6 mark as the Cowboys' coach.
OSU Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his eighth year at OSU and his 28th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the NCAA Tournament five times. Sutton currently owns a career record of 604-238 (71.7 percent) overall and is 174-74 (70.2 percent) at OSU. Sutton is just the seventh coach to reach 600 wins in 28 or fewer seasons.

About the Sooners
Oklahoma, considered to be one of the Big 12's best bets for an NCAA Tournament berth, comes into Saturday's game riding the momentum of a huge road victory over Texas on Sunday. Guard Corey Brewer ranks fourth in the Big 12 in scoring (20.4 ppg) and burned the Cowboys for 30 points in the teams' first meeting.

OSU jockeys for position as postseason play nears
As two of the Big 12's top three teams, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma are engaged in a stiff competition with each other for the South Division's top seed and with the rest of the nation for NCAA Tournament at-large berths. The Cowboys were ranked 37th in the RPI ratings through Monday's games and have a 9-3 record against other top-100 teams. As the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee prepares to meet to decide the field, here's a look at some of OSU's top victories this season:

Cowboys scoring at highest rate in eight years
OSU averaged 69.4 points per game in 1996-97, making last season's team the lowest-scoring Cowboys in 20 years, and they were out-scored by their combined opponents for the first time since 1988. But this season, OSU is averaging 81.6 points per game (which would be the highest scoring average under Eddie Sutton and third-best in school history) and out-scoring its opponents by an average of 11.7 points. The Cowboys have reached the century mark in two games this season after failing to score 100 in the past two years and have had more 80-point games this season (12) than in either of the past two seasons.
OSU tries to reverse 1997's road blues
OSU tied a school record with 14 victories at home last year, but the Cowboys were just 1-12 on the road and lost their first nine games in unfriendly territory. The Cowboys appear to be reversing that trend in 1997-98, with a 4-3 road record that includes victories at TCU and Oklahoma. OSU has already won more games away from Gallagher-Iba Arena (four including neutral-site contests) than it did in 16 tries last season, and the Cowboys are aiming for their first winning road record in four years. Surprisingly, the Cowboys' road three-point shooting percentage (40.6 percent) is better than their home percentage (28.8).
Charting the Cowboys' improvement
The 1996-97 Cowboys committed 90 more turnovers than their opponents, marking the team's first season with a negative turnover margin in four years, and for the first time since 1988, OSU opponents went to the line more often than the Cowboys.But those statistics have both turned around in OSU's 17-4 start to the 1997-98 year. The Cowboys' turnover margin is a Big 12-best +3.1 per game, and the Cowboys have attempted 126 more free throws than their opponents. Additionally, the Cowboys have already won as many games this season as they won in each of the past two seasons; OSU was 17-10 in 1996 and 17-15 in '97.
Robisch picks up the scoring pace
Senior center Brett Robisch has averaged 19.5 points in the past four games. He scored a career-high 24 points against Colorado and pulled down 11 rebounds, recording his eighth double-double this year and the 10th of his career. Despite playing just two seasons, Robisch already ranks sixth in school history with 10 double-doubles. He leads OSU in rebounding (8.5 rpg, third in the Big 12) and is third on the team in scoring (15.2 ppg, 12th in the Big 12).
Peterson gets hot as Cowboys reach Big 12 play
Junior guard Adrian Peterson has scored in double figures in nine of OSU's 11 conference games - and that's just been after halftime. Peterson, who averages 5.6 points in the first half and 13.1 in the second in conference games, set a new career best with a 29-point effort at Baylor, draining 22 of those points after the break. OSU's leading scorer (16.9 ppg), Peterson has turned his scoring up a notch in conference play (18.6 ppg) and is eighth in the league in scoring.
Peterson has been one of OSU's top scorers over his two-plus seasons at OSU, but he has added a new dimension to his game this season - rebounding.
"Pete" pulled down 10 boards to go along with his 27 points against Missouri, and he has the first four double-doubles of his career this season. Peterson's career rebounding high (seven) prior to this year is equal to his current average (7.0), which ranks 13th in the Big 12.
Gottlieb passes his way into the record books
Sophomore guard Doug Gottlieb has 146 assists and just 53 turnovers, a 2.75 assist/turnover ratio (best in the Big 12), and in the past two games he's had 17 assists and two turnovers. Gottlieb had a career-high 12 assists against Baylor while committing only one turnover - with 16 seconds remaining in the game. Just 19 games into his OSU career, Gottlieb is second in school history in double-figure assist games (six). His total of 146 assists this season already ranks sixth on the OSU single-season chart.
Mason continues sensational sophomore season
Sophomore forward Desmond Mason has had a breakthrough sophomore season. After struggling at times as a freshman and averaging just 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds, Mason has found his rhythm this year and is OSU's second-leading scorer and rebounder. He led OSU's balanced scoring attack at Iowa State with 18 points. Mason, who has six 20-point games and five double-doubles to his credit this year, now averages 15.8 ppg, 11th in the Big 12. His 7.4 rebounds-per-game average is ninth in the league.
Alexander becomes key player in second half of season
Senior guard Chad Alexander scored 15 points, a season high and his best tally ever in a conference game, in the Cowboys' victory at Oklahoma. He scored 12 points in the second half, eight of which came during a key 12-2 second-half run after OSU had trailed 57-48. Alexander earned his first start of the year against Colorado and responded with 11 points, four assists, three steals and no turnovers. He has hit 24 of his last 54 three-pointers (44.4 percent) and ranks eighth in school history in three-pointers made (91) and eighth in three-point percentage (38.7).
Adkins' free throw shooting nearly perfect
Sophomore guard Joe Adkins hit all five of his free throw attempts against Iowa State, improving his charity shooting percentage in Big 12 games to a league-best 90.9 percent. Averaging 12.5 points and leading the team in three-pointers made (32), he has made a remarkable improvement from his freshman season, when he averaged 3.8 points and hit just 18 threes all year. Adkins recorded a career-high eight assists at Texas and committed just two turnovers. The 6-2 guard's 11 points against Baylor included a spectacular one-handed dunk over Bears center Brian Skinner.
Montonati makes the most of increased playing time
Sophomore forward Brian Montonati had played no more than eight minutes in any game until he was thrust into the lineup at the end of the Baylor game with Robisch and Alex Webber having fouled out. Montonati has averaged 11.6 minutes in the past seven games; against both Texas A&M and Texas, he scored 10 points, two off his career high, and he had a career-best seven rebounds at Texas. Montonati has scored in double figures three times this season.
Sutton achieves victory No. 600
OSU's Jan. 24 victory over Texas A&M gave Cowboy coach Eddie Sutton the 600th coaching triumph of his career and his 100th coaching victory in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the 600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Among active coaches, Sutton ranks 14th in winning percentage and ninth in victories. Only three active coaches (Crum, Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools - joining Illinois (Gene Bartow and Lou Henson) and Kentucky (Sutton and Adolph Rupp) - with two coaches among the all-time top 20.
Streak intact as OSU closes non-league home season
OSU's home-court non-conference streak is now over 11 years old, and barring a postseason home loss, it will extend to the 1998-99 season. OSU's 78-game non-league win streak at Gallagher-Iba Arena is the longest such current streak in the country; Maryland has the second-longest streak at 58 games. The Cowboys' last non-conference loss in Gallagher-Iba was an 81-75 setback against Missouri Southern on Jan. 7, 1987, and the last Division I non-conference opponent to win in Stillwater was Tulsa in a 67-58 decision Dec. 21, 1985.

* OSU is 4-3 in games in which it has trailed by 10 points or more; the Cowboys have set a school record with four double-digit comebacks this season, and the 17-point comeback against Arizona State is the best in OSU history, according to recent research. The Cowboys are 13-1 when holding a double-digit lead at some point during the game.
* Redshirt freshman guard Estell Laster has withdrawn from school, the Cowboys announced last week. Laster had been suspended before the Texas game due to violations of team rules. He averaged 3.1 points and 1.3 rebounds in 14 games this season.
Looking ahead
Althought Saturday's game is one of the year's biggest, several important games await the Cowboys, especially next week. OSU visits Big 12 South Division contender Texas Tech on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. and surging Kansas State on Saturday at 7 p.m. Neither game is televised. The Cowboys close out the season with a pair of road games the following week, against Texas on Feb. 24 and against Kansas on March 1.
Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) has coached for seven-plus years at his alma mater with a 174-74 record at the school as well as a 604-238 overall mark in his 28th year of collegiate coaching. Sutton began the 1997-98 season ranked ninth in total victories and 15th in winning percentage among active Division I coaches with at least five years' experience. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to postseason play in six of the last seven years and has won 17 games or more each season. Sutton is just the seventh coach to reach the 600-victory mark in 28 years or fewer.

Coaches vs. Cancer
Cowboy coach Eddie Sutton is joining his NABC colleagues in participating in the Coaches vs. Cancer program this season. The Coaches vs. Cancer IKON Three-Point Attack is a fund-raising program that recruits fans to help fight cancer. Fans can contribute by making a one-time donation or by pledging any amount from $.01 to $10 or more for every three-point basket the Cowboys make during the season. Cowboy Radio Network
Saturday's game will be broadcast on the OSU Radio Network with KWTV's Bill Teegins handling play-by-play duties and OSU coordinator of radio & TV Tom Dirato providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their seventh year as the Cowboys' basketball radio team, and Dirato is calling OSU men's basketball for the 21st season in 1997-98 and called his 600th OSU game against Texas A&M, the same day as Coach Sutton's 600th victory.
Dirato and Teegins were unable to make the Cowboys' trip to Columbia on Jan. 14 due to icy weather in central Missouri. However, they were able to perform their game duties from Stillwater by watching the game on satellite TV in OSU's Educational Television Services building. Engineer Joe Riddle, on site in Columbia, combined the on-air commentary with the actual sounds of the game in the Hearnes Center, and the broadcast proceeded without a hitch.
Television coverage
Saturday's game with Oklahoma can be seen on the ESPN Regional network, including channel four in Oklahoma City and channel 2 in Tulsa. Dave Armstrong will handle play-by-play duties with Chris Piper providing analysis.

Game notes: In front of the eighth-largest crowd in Oklahoma history, OSU won in Norman for the first time since 1994 ... Alexander set a season scoring high and a career high for conference games. He scored eight points during OSU's crucial 12-2 run midway through the second half, capping the run with a three-pointer that gave the Cowboys their first lead of the second half ... 15 of Mason's 21 came in the second half, including the game's key play. With 49 seconds left and OU having cut OSU's lead to two points, Mason broke long against a full-court press, caught Robisch's perfect length-of-the-court pass, and dunked it. He was intentionally fouled, made one of two free throws and, on the ensuing possession, made two more charities to put the game away ... The Cowboys trailed by 12 points in the second half and achieved their school-record fourth comeback from 10 or more points behind this season.
