Cowboys to Compete Among Nation's Best Teams in Iowa
June 04, 2003 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
OSU is one of 35 teams overall. The field of 35 has three of the top five teams from last year's NCAA Championships, comprising of defending national champion Arkansas, second-place Stanford and fifth-place Southern Methodist. The Cowboys also are one of four Big 12 teams at the meet, including host Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State.
OSU is bringing some weapons of its own to the competition, though.
Last weekend at the OU Classic, Chuck Sloan and Brian Young recorded the best times in the Big 12 this season in the mile. Sloan won the race in 4:10.02 with Young coming in second at 4:11.26.
Andrew Hennessy is third in the Big 12 in the mile, posting a time of 4:11.44 in a first-place finish at the Wildcat Invitational on Jan. 16. He's also sixth in the Big 12 in the 1,000m, coming in at 2:29.05 in the OU Classic.
Sloan also leads the Big 12 in the 3,000m at 8:14.31, a time he set in a first-place finish at the Bank of Fayetteville Invitational on Jan. 22. Gitogo Churu is fourth in the Big 12 with a 8:26.62 mark set at the OU Classic. Nathaniel Lane is sixth, posting a time of 8:27.59 at the Bank of Fayetteville Invitational.
The meet starts Friday, Feb. 5, with men's weighted throws at 5 p.m. and the day ends with the women's 5,000m non-seeded final starting at 8:10 p.m. The meet resumes Saturday, Feb. 6, with the men's 3,000m non-seeded section at 10 a.m. The men's 4x400m wraps up the event at 5 p.m. Saturday.
