May 23, 2003 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
Both teammates are trying to automatically qualify for nationals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The race is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Sloan currently holds the 10th-best time in the nation. It's a 8:48.38 mark he set at the Hayward Relays in Eugene, Ore., earlier this month. The time meets the provisionally qualifying time but still is five seconds off the automatic mark of 8:43.00.
Hennessy has competed in the steeplechase only once this season, but he recorded a time of 9:11.46 at the Southwest Missouri State Big Bear Invite in late March. He needs a time of 8:54.00 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Ren Carlsen and Nathaniel Lane have already automatically qualified for the national championships in the 10,000m. This week, they'll try to also qualify for the 5,000m run at about 6:40 p.m. Thursday.
Gitogo Churu needs to increase his time of 30:05.73 in the 10,000m by 10 seconds to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. He willattempt that feat at 8 p.m. Thursday.
The met began Tuesday with the men's decathlon. The decathlon and women's heptathlon last through Wednesday. The running events commence Thursday with the college women's 400m hurdles at 9 a.m., while at the same time the women's pole vault kicks off the field events. The meet runs through Saturday.
Instead of going to the Penn Relays, David Metzger will compete in the 1,500m run at the Sooner Outdoor Invitational at 1:55 p.m. Saturday in Norman, Okla.
