May 23, 2003 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
Lane and Carlsen will go head-to-head in the 10,000-meters at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Lane, who is coming off a Big 12 Championship in the event, hopes to better his time of 29:01.17, which currently ranks No. 12 nationally in the event. Carlsen recorded a 29:08.31 for his best time during the season, giving him the 15th-best time nationally.
Sloan will try to repeat as an All-American in the 3,000m steeplechase. He finished sixth last year and hopes to improve his standing. He will have tough competition from teammate Andrew Hennessy. During the regular season, Sloan marked the nation's second-best time in 8:37.06, while also setting a school record. Hennessy is ranked No. 6 in the country with a time of 8:39.71.
The duo will compete in the second heat of the preliminaries. The event is supposed to start at 7:10 p.m. Thursday with finals at 8:25 p.m. Saturday.
In the 5,000m, Lane (14:07.41) and Gitogo Churu (14:09.18) reached the provisional qualifying times, but did not make the cut of 13:54.20 or better to go to the national championships. Brian Young also reached the provisional qualifying mark in the 1,500m but his 3:44.23 was just short of the cutoff of 3:43.90.
