Cowgirls Eliminated in NCAA First Round
May 10, 2003 | Cowgirl Tennis
The loss was the first time that the Cowgirls (17-7, 11-3) have been defeated in the NCAAs opening round since a 5-0 decision at the hands of Florida in 1996.
Harvard jumped on OSU early by picking up the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, senior Linda Faltynkova and junior Katya Kolodynska were defeated by No. 47 Courtney Bergman and Susanna Lingman, 8-2.
Senior Erin Pauchnik and sophomore Ewa Radzikowska would even things up with a 9-7 victory at the No. 2 position over Melissa Anderson and Ewa Wang. The tandem finished the year a perfect 12-0.
The Crimson would claim the doubles point with a victory at the No. 3 position. Alexis Martire and Cao Minh defeated the Cowgirl duo of sophomore Ines Furtmayr and freshman Zana Masnic, 8-6.
Oklahoma State was unable to overcome the early 1-0 deficit. Harvard would pick up decisions at the No. 2, 4, and 5 position to claim the match.
In her last match for OSU, senior Kate Vasylyeva was dropped by Lingman at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-0.
Harvard would claim a 3-0 lead when No. 78 Wang defeated Kolodynska at the No. 4 position, 6-2, 6-0.
The lone Cowgirl point came at the No. 6 singles position where Furtmayr defeated Alli Pillinger in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Harvard put the match away when Anderson picked up the 6-3, 6-2, straight set victory over Zana Masnic at the No. 5 position.
Faltynkova and Radzikowskas individual matchs were not finished because the team outcome had already been decided.
Oklahoma State ended the 2003 campaign winning nine out of ten matchs, including claiming the Big 12 tournament title for the first time in school history.
