Cowboys Keep Tradition Alive
April 06, 2003 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
The race will be hosted by Furman University, being held on the Furman Golf Course.
The team returned from Ames, Iowa, this past weekend with its third straight NCAA District V title. The Cowboys defeated a number of highly competitive squads in freezing weather, including 24th-ranked Iowa State, which placed ahead of them at the Big 12 Championship.
Men's head coach Dick Weis, 1997 District V Coach of the Year, will rest his squad this week in preparation for the race. He hopes to have his ninth-ranked team ready to bring home the national championship. Weis won his third straight district coach-of-the year award.
Junior Rene Carlsen will lead the Cowboys into the race, with support from sophomore Chuck Sloan, junior Brian Young, junior Nathaniel Lane, junior Habel Churu, senior Erik Framme and redshirt freshman Scott Gray.
The only national cross country championship title in the school's history was won in 1954 in a race held at East Lansing, Mich.
