60th Jamboree Showcases Talented Harriers

The race was ran on the Oklahoma State Cross Country Course with the junior college/college men starting the day at 8:30 a.m. covering an 8k course.
Oklahoma Baptist harrier, Awet Tsehaye was the individual champion covering the course in a time of 26:23.00 but his squad finished second to Oklahoma Christian in the JC/College standings.
The junior college/college women started their 5k run at 8:55 a.m. Kirsty Weir of Phillips was the individual champion with a time of 18:04.00 but her squad also fell second in the standings to Oklahoma Baptist.
The university women's division began their 5k at 9:15 a.m. The Baylor women took home the team championship surpassing Wichita State and controlling the field of 12 teams.
Baylor also took home the individual champion in Sherrie Smith who covered the course in a time of 17:50.00.
"The race felt good and it was smooth" said Smith. "The course was not too difficult; I just had to focus on maintaining during the race, that was it."
The Cowgirls for the second straight week were without the services of team leader and 1996 Cowboy Jamboree champion Hanna Smedstad.
They finished ninth in the 12 team field with Tamara Dingley leading the charge in 26th place (19:01) in the field of 88 runners.
"I felt alright," said Dingley. " I am coming off of an injury so I am working on getting to where I should be; I am still not where i want to be.' "This course is a tough course; It actually seemed tougher than last year." "Well actually, it always seems tougher when you are fighting in the pack versus running up in front; last year i placed second and this year 26th." "We will be ready for the Big 12 meet on this course, we do not have any choice, its' our home course."
Andrene Thompson stepped up again this week for the Cowgirls. Jenny Koch also performed well. The two attacked the course finishing not far behind teammate Dingley. The two finished the race in 29th (19:06) and 31st (19:10) place respectively.
Cowgirl scoring was completed by Brandi Woodard, 59th place (20:03) and Ashlea Barby, 72nd place (21:14).
Rounding out the Cowgirl finishers were Karla Dennis, 75th place (21:52), Heather Webb, 79th place (24:02) and Nikki Roady, 80th place (26:30).
The university men began their 8k race at 9:40 a.m. The race was highlighted with a great deal of talented harriers and cross country squads.
The meet provided top competition in Arkansas, Lubbock Christian and Oklahoma State who finished one through three respectively in the the team standings.
In addition to the team title, Arkansas took home the individual champion in Ryan Wilson, who covered the course in a time of 24:13.00.
"This was a pretty good race," said Wilson. "I did not go out as fast as I did last year so I was a little more in control; I felt good all the way through." "The changes made to the course this year made the race much nicer; a little quicker too." "This course is tough but the nice day made it go alright."
The sixth-ranked Cowboys struggled a bit but still performed well.
"The kids performed really well today but it makes you concerned when your 5th and 6th guys fall so far behind," said Head men's coach Dick Weis.
Chuck Sloan stepped up this week to lead the team with a 14th place finish (24:54).
"We wanted someone to come to the front today and lead the team; Chuck Sloan did just that; he will do much better at the 10k."
"I felt alright during the race; I entered this race very confident," said Sloan. " This course is a tough course but I am getting very familiar with it; this is making my race stronger." "Knowing how the course feels and how to react to it, made my race much easier." " We have a lot of work to do as a team; we will be alright; we have been training real hard lately." "We just have to get it clicking and go after it in the end; That is our goal, to make it to nationals and aim for the top four spots."
Rene Carlsen (25:07), Habel Gitogo Churu (25:14) and Nathaniel Lane (25:21) cruised close together through the 8k to finish the race in 14th through 16th place respectively.
Cowboy scoring was completed through Eric Framme's 22nd place finish (25:47).
Brian Young rounded out the Cowboy finishers with a 25th place finish in a time of 25:58.
"It is just a matter of time when the team comes together and performs much better than we are right now, " said Weis.
