April 03, 2003 | Cowgirl Equestrian
On Saturday, the English team rode a first-place finish by sophomore Corrie Janssen and three second-place showings before finishing second with 23 team points.
Sophomore Lindsay Smith finished second in Novice Flat, while sophomore Chandy Hale and freshman Laura Brawdy each finished second in their respective classes.
"It was good to be able to compete against the top schools in the country," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "It's really good to see that both squads are able to compete against the top schools."
OSU was one-of-12 schools that competed in the tournament. OSU finished in the top-two in both English and Western giving them the overall title. Texas A&M notched the top spot in English with 32 points and West Texas A&M finished first in Western with 23 points.
On Sunday, OSU had two Western teams finish second and fourth with 20 and 15 points, respectively. Ohio State finished with 15 points, too, but won the tiebreaker over OSU to finish in third.
"This is a good competition to see where we are at heading into zones and Nationals," Sanchez said. "We are looking forward to hosting zones on April 14 and then hopefully sending both teams to Nationals."
The Western team had two riders take home individual titles, Emily Hoaglan and Laura Brawdy, and two riders finish in second before taking home the overall team title.
Hoaglan captured first in Intermediate, while Brawdy took first in Beginning. Freshman Lindsay Childress and sophomore Luann Ulrich captured second in Advanced and Intermediate, respectively.
The Cowgirls will return to action on April 14 as they host the Zone Championships at the Animal Science Arena in Stillwater, Okla.
