Cowgirl Softball Shuts Out No. 5 Oklahoma
April 25, 2003 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State improved to 35-9 overall and 13-3 in the Big 12 while Oklahoma falls to 36-9 overall and 10-6 in the league.
The Cowgirls jumped out to a one-run lead in the bottom of the second and never looked back. Brooke Siebel drew a walk to lead off the frame and was replaced by Lacy Darity. Darity then stole second, moved to third on a single from Crystal Lee and scored on a base hit from Stephanie Hodges. Nicholson kept the rally going, reaching first on a walk to load the bases but the Cowgirls could not capitalize and were forced to leave the bases loaded and end the inning with a 1-0 advantage.
Oklahoma State saw its lead expand in the fourth, using three hits and solid play to push one run home.
Megan Carey singled up the middle and Ashleigh Tweed entered as the pinch runner. Tweed then moved into scoring position thanks to a sacrifice from Crystal Lee and a single from Stephanie Hodges that hit the gap between OU's shortstop and third. Jade Lindly completed the inning, picking up the RBI with a base hit up the middle.
In their final at-bat, the Cowgirls scored two more for the final margin. Hodges drew the walk to start the inning and moved to second when Stephanie Nicholson connected for OSUs third hit through the gap on the left side.
Calli Behmer sent Hodges home with a single to center field and just when it looked like the inning would end, Bay reached on an error by OUs second baseman. The bobbled catch also allowed Nicholson to round the bases for the last run of the game.
Lauren Bay improved to 22-6 and picked up her eighth shutout of the year. The senior issued five walks and struck out 10, marking the 23rd time she has fanned 10or more in a contest.
Kami Keiter took the loss for Oklahoma, falling to 25-5. Keiter fanned nine, walked three and surrendered four runs in 5.2 innings before Dana Askins entered in the sixth to pick up the final out.
Oklahoma State returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m., hosting Texas in a series that will decide the regular season Big 12 champion.
