April 21, 2003 | Cowgirl Softball
It took 12 innings but once again Oklahoma States softball team defeated the fifth-ranked team in the country, outlasting Nebraska 3-2 Sunday at Bowlin Stadium. The win gave the Cowgirls their first sweep over the Huskers since 1997.
Oklahoma State improved to 32-9 overall and 10-3 in the Big 12 while Nebraska dropped to 32-11 overall and 8-6 in league games.
Ryan Realmuto got the Cowgirls on the board first, leading off the fourth inning with a home run to center field but the Huskers answered in the following frame.
Jessica Yoachim singled and moved to second when Anne Steffan was hit by a pitch.
Nicole Trimboli then singled up the middle and advanced to second on a throw that also allowed Steffan to cross home plate.
The Cowgirls and Huskers combined to leave just one runner stranded in the next four frames. Things finally changed in the 10th when the international tie-breaker rule went into effect.
Lacy Darity started the inning on second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Jade Lindly then drew the walk to put runners on the corners. A double steal attempt followed and resulted in Lindlys being thrown out at second and Darity reaching home safely.
The Huskers entered the bottom of the frame down 2-1 but quickly evened the score. Amber Burgess started on second, moved on a sacrifice and scored the equalizing run on a wild pitch.
The Cowgirls took a one-run lead in the 12th and made it last. Megan Carey came through with her first hit of the day, doubling to center field to bring Afton Burris in for the winning run. Carey also earned the game-winning hit in Saturdays matchup with the Huskers, a home run in the seventh.
Lauren Bay (20-6) picked up the win on the mound, striking out 11 and walking five in the complete game effort. Peaches James (18-9) was saddled with the loss after she entered the contest in the 10th inning.
The whole weekend was an incredible team effort, said head coach Margaret Rebenar. The girls showed a lot of determination against a quality ballclub.
Oklahoma wraps up its four-game road swing on Monday, visiting Iowa State for a doubleheader slated to begin at noon.
