Cowgirl Softball Sweeps Iowa State
April 21, 2003 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first frame and never looked back. Stephanie Nicholson led off the inning with a base hit and later scored on passed ball.
Keeping in sync with her last at-bat, Nicholson led off the third inning with a triple then rounded the bases when Ryan Realmuto hit her fifth home run of the year.
The Cowgirls pushed three more runs home in the fourth, capitalizing on three errors in the inning. OSU also drew a walk and Realmuto singled to bring in the final run.
The Cowgirls continued to pound the Cyclones in the fifth, scoring two runs off three consecutive hits with two outs. Crystal Lee started the rally with a long ball, Jade Lindly followed with a double and Nicholson singled to bring Lindly home.
The Cowgirls got the last run needed to force the run-rule in the sixth, a homer from Lauren Bay.
Iowa State scored its only run of the contest in the third on a double from Erica Martinez.
Sarah Seagraves (11-0) earned the win from the circle, fanning seven and walking one while scattering six hits.
Oklahoma State dominated early in the second contest as well. The Cowgirls plated three runs in the first inning, but Iowa State made it a tie ball game after three.
Three of OSUs first four batters drew a walk to load the bases in the top of the first. Megan Carey then brought in two runs with a double and Stephanie Hodges sent one runner home before Iowa State could end the inning.
The Cyclones scored two in the second, using a leadoff home run and a pair of base hits to put their mark on the scoreboard. All was tied up in the third as ISU connected for three hits to bring in the equalizing run. The teams combined to leave nine runners stranded in the next two innings before Oklahoma State broke the deadlock in the top of the seventh.
Crystal Lee had the game-winnig hit, a single to left field with runners on second and third. Jade Lindly then went yard for the third time in less than a week to bring in Lee and give the Cowgirls a four-run cushion heading into the bottom of the frame.
Seagraves earned the start in the second contest, going three innings before Bay came on in relief. Seagraves struck out three Cyclones and surrendered three earned runs in three innings. Bay fanned five, walked two and scattered two hits en route to the win.
Oklahoma State (34-9) returns to action on Thursday, hosting OU at 6:30 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
