Cowgirl Softball Upsets No. 5 Nebraska
April 20, 2003 | Cowgirl Softball
Oklahoma States softball team used two solo home runs to upset fifth-ranked Nebraska 2-1 Saturday night in front of 663 fans at Bowlin Stadium. The Cowgirls improved to 31-9 overall and 9-3 in the Big 12 while Nebraska dropped to 32-10 overall and 8-5 in league contests.
Nebraska plated one run in the bottom of the first frame to take the early lead. With two outs Amanda Buchholz connected for a triple and Lisa Wangler drew a walk to place runners on the corners.
Nebraska then attempted a double steal which resulted in Buchholz reaching home safely and Wangler taking second on a throwing error by the Cowgirls.
The Huskers threatened to increase their lead in the second, but Lauren Bay fanned the final two batters of the inning forcing NU to leave three runners stranded.
Jade Lindly provided the answer run OSU needed in the top of the third, a solo shot to right field with one out. It was Lindlys second long ball in as many games and her fourth of the year.
After a pitchers duel for the next three innings, Megan Carey connected for a one-out homer in the top of the seventh to break the tie and give the Cowgirls the win on the road.
Lauren Bay (19-6) surrendered just two hits to the high-powered offensive team, holding the Huskers to their lowest hit total in nearly a month. The senior fanned 16 batters and walked four in the win.
Peaches James (18-8) took the loss for Nebraska despite striking out a career-best 13 from the circle. James also walked two and scattered four hits.
Oklahoma State and Nebraska return to the field Sunday at noon to conclude the series.
