NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma State's softball team lost a heartbreaker to fourth-ranked Oklahoma, 2-1, Wednesday night at the OU Softball Complex. The Cowgirls 15-game winning streak was snapped in front of a regular-season record crowd of 1365.
Lauren Bay fanned eight of the first nine batters she faced before walking Erin Evans in the bottom of the fourth. Evans then stole second but the Cowgirls' defense took care of business and Bay struck out the final batter to end the inning.
It was much of the same until the top of the seventh. Both pitchers had no-hitters going entering the final frame and only six batters had been left stranded the entire game.
That all changed when Ryan Realmuto stepped up to bat in the top of the inning. Realmuto touched Kami Keiter for her first hit of the day, a double to the fence in right center.
Erika Ennis entered as a pinch-runner and Bay followed up with a double down the left field line to drive in the go-ahead run. Bay's shot allowed Ennis to score for the second consecutive game when running for Realmuto.
The Cowgirls managed to get one more batter on base, but Keiter came through with two strikeouts to end the rally and keep the lead at one.
The show was not over as the Sooners had a comeback up their sleeves, plating two runs in the final frame to take the game.
Leah Gulla led off with OU's first hit of the contest and Jessica Leslie entered as a pinch-runner.
Bay then walked Christina Enea to move Leslie to second and set up the game-winning hit, a double from Heather Scaglione. Scaglione's shot made it clear to the center field wall and pushed two runs across home plate.
Lauren Bay fell to 16-4 with the loss, her first since March 6 at the Speedline Invitational in Florida. Bay fanned 13 Sooners, walked two and scattered two hits - both in the final frame.
Kami Keiter picked up the win for Oklahoma, improving to 21-2 on the year. Keiter surrendered two hits, walked two and struck out six Cowgirls.
Oklahoma State falls to 27-7 overall and 6-1 in the Big 12 while Oklahoma improves to 31-5 overall and 7-2 in the Big 12.
The Cowgirls return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m., facing Texas A&M in the first half of the two-game series in College Station, Texas.
