Western Team Wins Regional Championship

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Oklahoma State's Western team came from behind on the final day of competition to win the Regional Championship on Sunday at Texas A&M University.
The Cowgirls entered the weekend trailing region leading West Texas A&M by six points. In Saturday's show Texas A&M took over the lead by winning the competition with 29 points. Oklahoma State finished second with 25 points.
A trio of Cowgirls won their classes on Saturday. Sophomores Kayla Elmenhorst and Cheryl Adamson, along with, junior Lindsey Welsh all took home first place finishes. Junior Luann Ulrich, as well as, freshmen Baily Lee Nicholson and Stormi Guidry place second on Saturday.
Oklahoma State entered Sunday's competition trailing Texas A&M by five points. The Cowgirls won Sunday's show with 27 points. West Texas A&M was runner-up with 26 points. Texas A&M finished third with 20 points. The Cowgirls outscored the Aggies by seven points and won the Regional Championship by two points.
"It is amazing with how many good teams there are in this region and how many points that are available that it can be that close and come down to the final class," said Head Coach Larry Sanchez. "The girls rode well and I am very happy with their performance."
Several Cowgirls won their class on Sunday. Freshman Stephanie Rollins, Rosalyn Johnson, sophomores April Peck , Jessica Pruitt and Laura Brawdy all won first place. The first-place finish by Laura Brawdy qualified her for regional action.
Six Cowgirls finished second on Sunday. Senior Kristen Thomas, junior Kristin Dickerson, sophomores Allison Pickett, Lindsey Childress and freshman Stormi Guidry finished runner-up in their classes.
Oklahoma State has now qualified both the Western team and Hunter team for the IHSA National Championships. The championship will be held at Middle Tennessee State on May 2-4.
The Equestrian team will next be in action on March 8 when Oklahoma State host Regionals.
