HONOLULU, Hawaii - Oklahoma State's softball team opened its season here today, dropping both contests on day one of the Chevron Paradise Classic hosted by the University of Hawaii. The Cowgirls fell to Washington, 6-5, and Hawaii, 6-1.
In game one OSU squared off against sixth-ranked Washington, taking a four-run lead after four innings of play but the Huskies overcame the deficit to edge the Cowgirls in eight innings. The contest marked the third consecutive extra-inning game of the day, causing Oklahoma State's final game of the day to start over two hours late.
Oklahoma State started the game off on the right track when two-hole hitter Calli Behmer sent a solo shot over the fence for the early lead after one inning of play.
With two down in the second Lauren Bay kept the ball rolling, touching Washington pitcher Ashley Boeck for her second home run in as many innings. Bay's shot also scored Stephanie Hodges who reached on an error by Boeck.
The Cowgirls capitalized on yet another Washington error in the fourth when Hodges reached on an error for the second consecutive at-bat. A sacrifice fly from Stephanie Nicholson then brought Hodges home to score OSU's final run of the contest and up the lead to four.
Washington cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, scoring a pair of runs on a passed ball and Cowgirl error.
The Huskies continued to rally in the bottom of the seventh when leadoff batter Jaime Clark reached on an error and moved to second on a Kristen Rivera single. The Cowgirls nearly escaped the inning untouched, but with two outs Sarah Hyatt came up with a big base hit to bring in Clark and Rivera before being tagged out to end the inning.
Due to tournament rules, the international tie-breaker was enforced in the eight inning and Washington used it to its advantage. After OSU was unable to score, Rita Roach started the bottom of the fram on second and scored the winning run on a base hit from Kathy Fiske.
Lauren Bay (0-1) went the distance on the mound, striking out 13 and walking three in the losing effort.
Oklahoma State faced Hawaii in the nightcap and despite jumping out to an early lead, the Cowgirls were saddled with their second loss of the day.
Once again, the Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead after one inning when Ryan Realmuto brought in Nicholson for OSU's only run of the game. Nicholson took a base after being hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Calli Behmer to set up Realmuto's RBI.
Hawaii scored three runs in the second to take the lead and the host school never looked back. The Wahine started the inning with a pair of base hits and Denise Dahlberg followed with a double to bring in the go-ahead run. Noelle Izume then capped off the inning with a single to score Dahlberg before the Cowgirls were able to get the final out.
The Wahine then doubled the score in the bottom of the third when April Crowell sent a three-run dinger deep over the right field fence for the final margin of the game.
Brooke Siebel (0-1) took the loss on the mound after giving up six runs in three innings of work. Siebel also fanned one batter and walked one. Sarah Seagraves came on in relief in the fourth, recording four strikeouts and two walks.
Oklahoma State continues tournament play on Saturday, facing Louisville and Santa Clara.
