TUCSON, Ariz. - Oklahoma State hit the ground running in the first game of the Worth Invitiational on Friday, shutting out Western Michigan, 8-0, in five innings. The Cowgirls exploded for five runs in the first inning and never looked back.
An error by Western Michigan's pitcher, Wendy Cannon, brought in the first run and allowed Calli Behmer to move to third and Brooke Siebel to reach second. Lauren Bay then collected a base hit and Cannon committed her second error of the inning that allowed Behmer to score.
This was followed by a walk and a bases loaded hit-by-pitch on which Siebel came home for the third run of the inning. The bats stayed hot and Megan Carey did her part to clear the bases, singling to center field to bring Crystal Lee and Bay home.
After the offensive show from Oklahoma State, Western Michigan collected the final two outs to force the Cowgirls to leave three runners stranded to close out the inning.
Oklahoma State added another run in the second on a pair of hits, highlighted by a two-out single to center field from Lee.
Facing a new pitcher in the third, the Cowgirl bats were silenced but not for long as OSU put up two more runs in the fourth to seal the outcome.
Sarah Seagraves (3-0) and Cami Carter combined for the shutout from the mound. Seagraves earned the start, fanning three batters, walking one and giving up two hits in four innings of work. Carter came on in relief for the final inning, sitting down two-of-three batters she faced.
Oklahoma State faces second-ranked Arizona at 6 p.m. (CST) to close out the first day of action at the Louisville Slugger.
