TUCSON, Ariz. - Oklahoma State's softball team extended its win streak to five today, defeating New Mexico, 6-1, and Virginia, 11-3, on the second day of the Worth Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona.
In game one, Brooke Siebel got the Cowgirls started in the top of the third with a RBI single to left field. Stephanie Nicholson scored on the play after leading of the inning with a base hit to right field.
New Mexico evened the score in the bottom of the frame. The Cowgirls were unable to produce for the next two innings but regained the lead for good in the top of the sixth.
Two powerful at-bats, a double from Megan Carey and a home run from Jade Lindly, allowed the Cowgirls to put two runs on the board. With the long ball Lindly earned the game-winning hit for the second consecutive game.
The Cowgirls added three insurance runs in the seventh when Lacy Darity crossed the plate thanks to an error from New Mexico's pitcher. Carey followed with a two-run dinger for the final three runs of the game.
Brooke Siebel picked up her first win of the season on the mound before Sarah Seagraves came on in relief in the fifth.
The Cowgirls had to play catch-up in the second game of the day as they trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the fifth. It did not present a problem for OSU as three runs were pushed home in the fifth and six in the sixth to force the run-rule.
Stephanie Hodges claimed the first RBI of the fifth inning on a double and Stephanie Nicholson followed with a base hit deep into center field to bring in the final two runs of the frame.
A passed ball and an error in the sixth allowed Erika Ennis and Afton Burris to score before the real show began. With two outs, Nicholson unloaded for a grand slam to bump the margin to 11-3 and end the game.
Seagraves (4-0) earned the win, throwing the first 2-1/3 inning. Bay picked up the save, the first by a Cowgirl this year, closing out the contest with four strikeouts.
Oklahoma State (8-3) will play its final game in Arizona on Sunday, facing Drake at noon (CST).
