Equestrian Team Wins Fourth Straight Show
December 09, 2003 | Cowgirl Equestrian
Brianne Wiebe recorded her first High Point Rider title of the season after earning a pair of first-place finishes in Reining and Open Horsemanship. The Acme, Alberta, Canada, native captured her first victories of the year, and helped the Cowgirls win its fourth consecutive show.
“I am very excited,” Wiebe said. “I don't think anybody would expect a freshman from Canada to come in and win High Point Rider. It helps my confidence and reassures me that I can go out there and compete at this level of competition.”
The Cowgirls recorded a quick 14 team points after Kristin Dickerson and Crissy Meeks each notched a first-place finish in Reining and Open Horsemanship, respectively. Dickerson and Meeks each recorded their third win in four outings.
“I am very pleased at the outcome of the show,” Head Coach Larry Sanchez said. “I can't stress the difficulty on putting on a show. It is hard for the girls to compete and help put on the show as well as the coaches.
“I am very impressed with how they rode in all the divisions,” Sanchez said. “The girls are riding well right now and their confidence is good, but we need to get better at the fundamentals and polish up a little bit.”
OSU took a five-point lead over next closest Texas A&M heading into the Intermediate class. A&M cut the lead to four after recording five team points to OSU's four. TAMU got within three points after OSU didn't score a team point in Novice, but that is the closest as they would get.
The Cowgirls secured the victory with Amanda Yancy's first-place finish in Beginner. Texas A&M didn't score any points and West Texas A&M scored three points to get within eight.
With Brandi Thomas' third-place finish in Advanced, OSU finished the day with a nine-point advantage over Texas A&M and West Texas A&M.
In her first collegiate show, Stillwater product Lacy Boyer rode her way to a first-place finish in Intermediate II, while Whitney Holden competed in her first Western show and finished second in Intermediate II.
The Cowgirls return to action on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 9 a.m. at the Animal Science Arena.
