Cowboys down Southeastern State, 93-46
December 17, 2003 | Cowboy Basketball
“I thought overall we played pretty well,” said OSU Coach Eddie Sutton. “I thought we passed the ball better tonight and attacked the zone better than we've been doing. I was hoping some of the things we've been able to work on in the past week would have surfaced tonight, and I think they did.”
A pair of Pokes recorded double-doubles for OSU. Senior forward Ivan McFarlin scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting while also grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds in the win. It was his 16th-career double-double. Junior guard John Lucas recorded a double-double of his own with 10 points and a career-high 11 assists, his first as a Cowboy.
OSU took an early eight-point lead just three minutes into the game when Daniel Bobik hit one of his five three pointers at the 16:54 mark of the first half. The Cowboys were up 15 just 10 minutes later, and then went on a 15-0 run over the next four minutes to jump ahead by 30. The Pokes took a 34-point lead into the lockerroom, 56-22.
"We just tried to come out and play hard," said Bobik. "We haven't played for a week and a half, so we just tried to come out and take out some of our frustration of the loss and not playing for a while. The bottom line is that we just needed to come out and play as hard as we could."
The two teams played pretty even throughout the first 10 minutes of the second stanza, each scoring just 10 points in the period before Southeastern's Jason Stampley, the team leader with 12 points, hit a trey at the 9:50 mark. It was all Oklahoma State after that, though, as the Cowboys built up a 49-point lead with 3:01 remaining.
Oklahoma State had six players score in double figures, and Tony Allen, the team's leading scorer, was not one of them. Bobik added 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the three-point line, while Jason Miller contributed 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Senior Janavor Weatherspoon had 10 points, while junior Joey Graham added 10 as well.
"We've been working a lot on defense, and getting better at that," said Weatherspoon. "We knew coming into this game we would have to outrebound them and play hard and take care of the ball. That's what we did tonight."
OSU shot 53.6 percent from the floor, including 7-of-13 from beyond the arc, while limiting the Savages (6-3) to just 33.3 percent. The Cowboys, after being outrebounded in their last outing by 26, outboarded Southwestern State, 46-27. The Pokes also forced 22 turnovers, while committing just 10 of their own.
Oklahoma State (5-1) will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend to play the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff for the game in Bud Walton Arena is set for 4 p.m., and the game will be televised by Cowboy Sports Properties.
