December 30, 2003 | Cowboy Basketball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Tony Allen scored 22 points to help give Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton a 73-58 victory Saturday in his first game back in Fayetteville, where he coached Arkansas to nine NCAA tournaments in 11 seasons.
Oklahoma State (6-1) broke open a close game by holding Arkansas (6-2) without a field goal for a 10-minute stretch that started in the first half and extended four minutes into the second. The Cowboys put together a 21-5 run in between baskets by Arkansas freshman Ronnie Brewer.
Oklahoma State extended its lead to 49-32 before the Razorbacks cut it to 52-43 with 7 minutes left in the game. Wen Mukubu came off the bench for a basket and leading scorer Jonathon Modica came to life with seven points in the run.
Modica came in averaging 21 points per game, but had just two in the first half. He battled back to score 23 and Brewer finished with 15 points.
Joey Graham, who added 13 points, returned the momentum to Oklahoma State with a 3-pointer at the 5:38 mark to push Oklahoma State's lead back to 57-43.
Arkansas came out cold and shot 35 percent for the game, 29.2 in the first half, and Oklahoma State made it hard for the Razorbacks to get close to the basket. Arkansas' players didn't help themselves at the free- throw line either, making just 12 of 23 shots.
Arkansas led briefly in the first half when Brewer gave Arkansas a 17-15 edge with 6:14 left in the half with a dunk after a backdoor pass from Rashard Sullivan.
