Oklahoma State Student-Athletes Excel In The Classroom

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Governor Brad Henry recently recognized Oklahoma State's student-athletes and all of the various accomplishments they achieved in the classroom during the 2002-03 school year.
Governor Henry honored the student-athletes at halftime of the OSU-Texas football game with a special resolution. On hand for the ceremony were Dr. Marlene Strathe, Oklahoma State University Provost, OSU Athletics Director Dr. Harry Birdwell and OSU Associate Athletic Director of Academic Affairs and Director of Academic Services for Student-Athletes Dr. Marilyn Middlebrook.
Oklahoma State student-athletes had a banner year academically and several of their achievements are noted below:

Oklahoma State student-athletes had a banner year academically and several of their achievements are noted below:
- 97 percent of the OSU senior student-athletes who exhausted their eligibility last year have graduated or will graduate this year.
- OSU had 22 individual Academic-All-Americans/Scholar-Athletes, which was the second most in the Big 12 Conference.
- Eight out of the 16 Oklahoma State athletic teams were nationally recognized as All-Academic Teams, which was an OSU record.
- 97 OSU student-athletes made the Academic All-Big 12 team, which was the school's most ever.
- Men's Basketball, Men's Golf, Softball and Wrestling either led the Big 12 Conference or tied for first in Academic All- Big 12 selections.
- Softball senior pitcher Lauren Bay was selected as the Oklahoma NCAA Woman of the Year. Bay graduated in December of 2003 as an International Business major.
- Softball player Jade Lindly and Men's Basketball player Ivan McFarlin were the NCAA Leadership Conference selections. There were 1,172 nominations from 302 institutions and 273 people were selected.
- In the 2002 fall semester, 34 student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average which garnered them President's Honor Roll recognition. 29 student-athletes accomplished this impressive goal in the spring.
- In the 2002 fall semester, 58 student-athletes were named to the Dean's Honor Roll, recognizing students who record grade point averages between 3.50 to 3.99. 59 student-athletes received this honor in the 2003 spring semester.
- 207 student-athletes earned Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll recognition (3.0 GPA and higher) in the 2002 fall semester, while 206 student-athletes earned this distinction in the 2003 spring semester.
"As the bar has been raised for performance in athletic competion and improved facilities, so has the bar been raised for student-athletes in the classroom," Dr. Middlebrook stated. "Student-athletes continue to strive for a more positive image which is primarily accomplished by earning good grades, graduating and giving back to the community. I am extremely proud of the student-athletes and what they are attempting to accomplish."
